iPhones Are For Wankers

Following my recent dive onto the pants of Steve Jobs and the purchase of an iPhone that followed, I've been trying my hardest to stay human and not find a reason to pull my new toy out at every opportunity screaming 'have you seen this new app'. I think I'm doing quite well, I've still got a fully functioning brain and two average sized thumbs. Freshapps has today highlighted the iPhone's main use and target audience, the lonely-male mobile-masterbator. Picture Safe is the new app for locking away smut and filth on your iPhone.. just read the seedy description.. bunch of wankers!

I like patterns, and I like symmetry, so it's no surprise that I like it when videos of shapes are reflected into a kinda kaleidoscope video. Great. The first minute is the best, but then the music drops and the rest fits the music really well. Fave bit other than the start minute is the clouds.

So right now I'm in work and the Christmas Carols have been cranked up, I watched Elf on the weekend and had my yearly winter trip to the seaside where I ate like Henry the Eighth.. basically I'm feeling pretty Christmassy right now! I came across this video through a ffffound hunt which linked me to a site by the name of Raketenblog which itself is very nice, it's just a shame I don't understand it at all cos its all in German! Full of good links though. The video and art is created by Erik Natzke, who from what I have read creates the majority of his work through ActionScript 3.0. There's a nice image of a quote by him, here. Turns out Erik was at Flash On The Beach this year, I'm a bit annoyed that I missed him, hopefully next year! I think I'd like to meet Erik and steal his brain while he's not looking. Erik if you ever read this get in touch!

So tomorrow is the big day, US election time. Where's your money? We all have our theories and all know who we'd like to win, but sadly, unless you're in the US there's nothing you can do about it. Pitch Interactive, haven't done a Fox and tried to sway voters one way or another, instead they've taken data about where the presidential donations came from and created some beautiful circular charts. In recent internet-days they've now gone one deeper, and split the Presidential Donations down into Job Titles of Donors. Make sure to click the images to get a super-sized zoomed in image.

Jim Bumgardner - YouTube: CoverPop

A dude called Jim Bumgardner, has created this spectrum of colour from the weeks top rated videos on YouTube. Scope it out here. It's updated twice weekly and I assume it dynamically places them on the spectrum by working out their dominant colour. He's also made a couple of funnys/cringers from YouTube vids tagged as 'hunks' 'hotties' and 'lip sync'. Looking at his personal blog, I really liked the Jelly Belly Mosaic. Thought that was pretty cleaver stuff. But then I came across some more of his work which reminded me all the way back to uni. He is the man behind this, which was a massive inspiration during my final project at uni. Crazy how things come back to meet you again. Hey Jim, teach me some stuff please.

At last, I've found an alternative ffffound.com. Yes ffffound.com is good, I love it, but they don't love me, I've requested multiple times, well twice, to become a registered member, and they simply wont let me in. So now world, we have a new toy, vi.sualize.us! Come join me and become a fan/friend/stalker of mine. I've also added it to the right hand bar of this here blog.

Urban Play 2008 Sagmeister Inc.

Look at this, look at this. It's amazing! Sagmeister is so frigging cool. He got 100 people to sort out 250,000 Eurocents into 4 different shades of coin, then made a frigging huge mural. Check the video and the account of what happened over the 8 days here. As I always say, I love it when things are made the hard way, they are so much more rewarding! People might read this and think, "well why are you in web design?" To which I would say, look at this. A hell of a lot of effort has gone into making the elasticmind site. And I personally think it's an amazingly rewarding experience that I'd go back again and again to. Kinda like when tokyoplastic fitst came out.. I remember all of uni were loving it.

Notwist

Notwist is a website for the German band The Notwist. It's quite a creepy site, especially with the sound on.. actually change that, it's only creepy with the sound on. On my first time I found it confusing to navigate which also added to the creepyness (not a real word but like it). I really like the little games and puzzles where you have to find the correct thing to click to progress you to the next puzzle. Have a play, I think you'll get what I mean from just playing, don't get to scared.

I've been bad, and broken my rules of posting.. it's been a while but I'm back! For the last few weeks I've kept a track of some nice things that have impressed me, and now I'm about to unleash them, so the next 4 or 5 posts are my backlog. Apologies if my comments don't make too much sense.. I've got a stinking hangover from a house party last night!

So this is the first image of joy. I've came across this via the creative review blog. It's an exhibition created by (i think) the same people who did that amazing exhibition in Tate Modern called Global Cities. They've taken facts and figures of the world and represented them in rice. Sounds simple but isn't it nice to have visual representations of numbers. I really like the representations of crowds and events, like the Live Aid gig. As well as the CCTV fact and the Beatles facts.

I love it when things are made the hard way! Rather than creating this image using Photoshop Ian Wright has actually ripped up newspapers, bills, envelopes, posters and anything else he could find of the correct shade, to create this amazing image. Anything like this always reminds me of the coffee cup poster by Sagmeister for the Adobe Design Achievement Awards! I loved that then and I still love it now. 2500 cups filled with different depths of coffee to create a range of brown tones then aranged into an award. Awesome idea!

Lee Mawdsley

Lee Mawdsley is a photographer based in East London. Anyone who has an eye for symmetry in photography gets my vote. As I've said before, what I enjoy in photography is highlighting beauty in something that the average viewer would simply dismiss as impossible to hold beauty.

What I like about this image in particular is the amount of 'individual living' happening in the photo. Thousands of homes each lived in in their own unique way, hundreds of cars going about their personal journey, two directions of train lines, going in and out of the city. And then in the distance in the haze of the city is probably Paris' second most famous tourist spot, Arc de Triumph, which itself must be viewed by a million people a day.

NYTE - New York Talk Exchange

The New York Talk Exchange, is a visualisation of when the population of NY 'dial out' of the city and call the rest of the world. I like all 3 of the projects here but the third one, 'the world inside new york' contains the most information and shows data that I've not come across before, compared to the other 2. The world inside new york shows the diversity of each section's calling habits. Each square represents a 2 kilometre square block, within that block the different countries dialled are represented by colour coded percentage bars. I really like the shade of black used for the background colour along with the palette used for the map in the top left. I don't like the blurred gradient which points to the chosen square, although it is a good method of pointing to whichever square has been selected. The Holy Grail Of Information Design

I've found it! The mother of all sites, Elasticmind! Elasticmind is part of the MoMA site and is what my dreams are made of! It's amazingly smooth, beautifully built and full of information! And I love information! I really like the circles that house the preview of the link (image above) and the category lines that flow from the circular rings.

From the Elasticmind site I've come across The Dumpster which is definitely worth a giggle. It's a visual portrait of romantic breakups collected form blogs in 2005, so I guess its ok to giggle at it now! This kinda reminds me of wefeelfine but personally think wefeelfine is much sexier. If anyone wants to get in contact and teach me how to create works of beauty like these then please please do!! I need this in my life!! email me at pkamaze@gmail.com

www.iso50.com, The Visual Work Of Scott Hansen. Loads of sexy sexy things on here, the colour schemes used in some of his posters (found on the right of the page) are really nice. Visually the posters are beautiful anyway, but I'm all over the colour. He's got a really nice post on a photographer by the name of Ryan Fitzgerald. The night photography of concrete does it for me.

Patterns Of Light, Casinos And Train Passengers

Anybody who knows me knows that I've got a strange addiction to patterns. Watching this today got me excited to make more videos, and the simplicity of this video made it all the more beautiful. It's a music video for Maledict Car by the Japanese band Jemapur and was directed by Kosai Sekine to form part of the Tokyo.Ten - a showcase DVD and book which looks worth picking up.

In photography I enjoy the task of highlighting things that your average person does not spot. Whether it's the beautiful repetition of balconies on a rundown block of flats who's shades of colour change in the sunlight as you progress away from the light source. Or the underside of a bridge with water reflecting on a perfect mono-grey shade of concrete with the exact perfection of the columns at equal distance from each other.

So there you have it, that's what floats my photography boat! Once I get my new portfolio website together I'll be putting some of my photography up and will link to it from here. Until then check my flickr.

Vincent Laforet is Contract Photographer for the Ney York Times. His website is really nice and simple and full of some pretty incredible photos.

Some of my faves are the shots looking straight down to the ground over large groups of people on the beach or on the grass. I like these images because they highlight social groups and show the limits of everyone's personal space as well as who is friends with who. I suppose they also give a snapshot of fashion and trends in colour and hairstyles. The beach one is also really nice because everybody is framed by a coloured square of blanket.

Yet another reason for me to fancy living/working in NY.. think it is gona have to happen!

Yet more information graphics that fills my brain with the stuff it loves to see.. colour! I don't think this piece even needs explaining which proves how good it is at its job. I think what I like about it the most is the way there is no x-axis in the sense of a 'zero'. Instead the week's data is centrally aligned spilling out of the top and bottom on a week when the box office made its millions or contracting inwards when all that week's films were flops. Also check out the 1998 chart and let your eyes pop out at the Titanic facts.

This is too nice not to post.. it's a visual representation of an audio track highlighting the fact that sometimes it is not just the eyes that see colour. Some people see colour when they hear music. This phenomenon, when a sense is stimulated another sense experiences a sensation, is called Synethesia.

I found this on EveryoneForever, part of the UniversalEverything site. Incidentally, UniversalEverything and Matt Pyke are pretty much my idols. 'One day Rodney, one day we'll be millionaires'.

Energizer Ad / The State Of Art Direction

I just came across this ad for Energizer, the tag-line reads, 'Never let their toys die'.. well it made me laugh! Came across this in the Creative Review blog whilst reading an article on 'The state of art direction' which is definitely worth a read. I found it interesting what was said about the problem with our current image-based culture as a result of our good friend Apple and their simple to use software.. I think you should just read the article.

So.. after recently viewing David Sparshoot's blog on the ycn, and at the same time receiving a stern word in the ear from my boy Patl I decided that it was quite simply time to pull my finger out and get the blog flowing.

The plan is simple.. one post per day, a snapshot of my daily brain workings and an insight into just what makes me tick. There will no doubt be links to my flickr, where I've decided to dump a load of images that I've come across on the net. The reasons for this are tarnished in misery, I emailed fffound begging to be added as a user and I've been shunned.
